Garden room construction? Use oak beams

Remember that people have recycled building materials for thousands of years; the beams in the barn may be much older–or much younger–than the rest of the barn. Never depend on a single determinant; documentary resources may provide as much–or more–information about the structure as a single piece of wood which may or may not have been original to the building. If you’re planning to demolish an old barn, possibly because it has become unstable and unsafe or possibly because you need the acreage for another purpose, you might be faced with a requirement to document the barn, its materials and its age to satisfy a local preservation ordinance. Even if you are not planning to demolish the barn and are simply doing research into local history or seeking more information on your own property, determining the age of the wooden beams will tell you much about the structure’s history. Look at the overall construction of the barn and determine whether it was post-and-beam or post-tension construction, or some combination of those–or other–methods. Two key things to remember are that construction methods overlapped and may represent a regional influence or the builder’s preferences: not all residences in the High Italianate style are of the later-middle period of the Victorian Era, nor are all residences from the later-middle period of the Victorian Era of the High Italianate style.

In an important new development David Spurling, a HYDE Trustee, revealed that oak timber in the attic of Old Hyde House, now the offices of ADAM Architecture, could be dated back to the late 13th century and, almost certainly would have originally constituted a seven canted roof in the Hyde Abbey structure. Describing the research into the attic timbers as being equivalent to the investigation of a crime scene David Spurling explained that interest in the roof timber had originally been sparked, some years ago, by John Crook and Edward Roberts.

Following on this information HYDE organised a dendro-dating exercise which had placed the age of the wood several centuries before the construction of the house itself probably late 16th century. The evidence of crown posts, central purlin and possibly tie beams all added up to them forming a sophisticated structure of a kind normally associated with an ecclesiastical building.

This suggested a clear link with Hyde Abbey which appears to have undergone substantial redevelopment in the period The significance of this was underlined by HYDE Trustee Edward Fennell, who said that the beams represented an important link with Hyde Abbey when it was in its heyday. We can take enormous pride and satisfaction in having brought it to light. Including abbey outline and buildings.

Dendrochronology or tree-ring dating is the scientific method of dating tree rings also called growth rings to the exact year they were formed. As well as dating them this can give data for dendroclimatology , the study of climate and atmospheric conditions during different periods in history from wood. Dendrochronology is useful for determining the precise age of samples, especially those that are too recent for radiocarbon dating , which always produces a range rather than an exact date. However, for a precise date of the death of the tree a full sample to the edge is needed, which most trimmed timber will not provide.

In the production of oak beams two basic methods can be employed, either radial splitting or sawing. Using the first of these methods, each beam produced will.

Notably, after a massive earthquake caused major structural damage to the mosque in , a lot of work was done to strengthen the building, and a number of wooden beams were removed, many of which are now in the Rockefeller Museum in East Jerusalem. In the s, more wooden beams were removed from the Temple Mount and some were sold to a merchant in Ramallah.

Some Israelis actually purchased these beams and sent them for Carbon 14 and dendrochronological tree ring dating at the Weizmann Institute. Most of the beams were found to be from cyprus trees or cedar trees from Lebanon and some were oak from Turkey. While the vast majority of tested beams dated to the Byzantine period 6th century CE , some of the beams date much earlier. There are two beams in particular that date to the First Temple Period, one of cyprus dating to around the 7th century BCE, and one of oak dating to around the 10th century BCE according to the C14 tests.

A “forest” of wooden latticework inside Notre Dame Cathedral fueled the fire that consumed the iconic church. The medieval roof structure “has been lost,” according to Monsignor Patrick Chauvet, the rector of the cathedral. The cathedral’s wooden frame, which primarily consisted of oak, contains beams that date as far back as the first frame built for the cathedral.

That frame featured trees cut down between and , forming one of the oldest parts of the structure. Most of the current frame dates from the year , according to the church’s website.

InspectAPedia tolerates no conflicts of interest. We have no relationship with advertisers, products, or services discussed at this website. We include a table of modern dimensional lumber nominal and actual sizes for kiln dried and treated wood. We include research citations assisting in understanding the history and development of the mechanically-operated reciprocating saw or a mechanical and often portable replacement for the hand-operated “pit saw”.

Generations of types of adzes, axes, broadaxes and saws used in cutting beams, and similar details are readily available on many buildings. The marks left by these tools offer both clues to building age and wonderful aesthetic detail. Below, in rough chronological order, we illustrate different types of saw and tool cut marks in wood: adze cuts, hand sawn pit saw marks, mechanically-operated pit saw marks, circular saw marks, and unmarked, planed modern dimensional lumber.

We discuss the visual comparison of adze marks, axe marks, hand sawn lumber, mechanical pit sawn lumber, and circular saw mill cut lumber and boards. Timber frame construction initially used hand hewn beams, cut roughly rectangular by an adze and axe. Later timber frame construction used sawn beams and still later wood frame construction used sawn sills, studs, joists and rafters.
